In one of my last posts before I started moving in earnest, I said that I would post a collection of my favorite photographs from my trip to California last year to visit the giant trees (both coastal redwoods and giant sequoias).

In one of my last posts before I started moving in earnest, I said that I would post a collection of my favorite photographs from my trip to California last year to visit the giant trees (both coastal redwoods and giant sequoias). I almost forgot to do that in all the chaos that's followed, but – still under a year since I returned from that trip – that post is here now.
I was originally planning to narrow this down to ten photographs, but it was a long trip, and I found that difficult. I opted for fifteen instead.
Muir Woods (and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area)
Golden flowers in the mist, Golden Gate National Recreation AreaA stand of coastal redwoods in Muir Woods; sadly, the mist had all departed by then and sunny conditions prevailed, which made photography difficult
Redwood National and State Parks
Sunset at Tepona Point, my only sunset of the trip (I was coming down with a nasty head cold that evening, but the view was good)Marching redwoods in the Rockefeller Grove, with less bright conditionsThe slopes of the Atlas Grove at Prairie Creek State Park; sunlight was aggressive again that day, but the forest provided shadeFerns in Prairie Creek State ParkFerns in Prairie Creek State Park
Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Two near giant sequoias frame two farther ones, as well as a tall pine tree which provides scale; this day was also too bright to be good for photography, but providing a sense of the sequoia's immensity proved tricky elsewhereRapids on the Stanislaus River; I had not taken my tripod on this hike and wish I had, but I still like how this turned out
Sequoia and Kings' Canyon National Parks
Panoramic Point in Kings' CanyonThe night sky outside of Muir LodgeFor one day in Sequoia and Kings' Canyon the misty conditions I'd been hoping for the whole trip presented themselvesMost of my photos as such ended up coming from that day, but I narrowed it down to threeThe bird flying through the shot warrants its inclusion over several others (the dense mist briefly gave way to hail on this hike, but hasn't yet)View from the top of Moro Rock, looking back towards the Giant Forest (I love how easily one can discern the silhouettes of individual trees from this distance)
And there it is! I have no photography trips planned this year, so it may be some time before the next photo compilation post. But I do hope to get out at least to some local state parks or such in the fall, so we'll see.
